Nursing Science students gave free blood pressure readings at the Walgreens store located
at 1601 S. Air Depot Blvd., Midwest City, Okla., on Nov. 12, and will provide the free
community service again on Tuesday, Nov. 19, from 8 a.m. – 8 p.m.
RSC Nursing Science Director Rebekah Ray R.N. said the nursing students complete a
community-learning experience as part of their first semester clinical requirement. The
experience also serves to educate community members about blood pressure and its
impact on health.
“All nursing students engage in a similar type community-learning experience in [the
Fundamentals of Nursing Practicum] course as well as in subsequent courses,” she said.
Although some of these community-learning experiences are required, others are
voluntary and give the Nursing Science students the opportunity to serve the Mid-Del and
RSC community.
“There are multiple objectives for this learning experience,” Ray said.
Among them are introducing the students to the provision of nursing care in a community
setting as opposed to an acute care setting; practice of skills learned in class; experience in educating patients about their health; and introducing the students to service learning
as a “means of giving back to the community,” Ray said.
