Rose State College Student Senate members competed in the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics Two-Year College Ethics Bowl nationals on Feb. 19 in Costa Mesa, California.

“We didn’t place last,” team captain David Magar said. Out of seven teams in the division, RSC came in sixth.

Each team was given a set of cases to study and analyze beforehand; Magar said their packet contained 14. “(The team) had a bunch of meetings” to discuss research and situation scenarios, he said.

Magar said each team had to decide the difference between what is moral and what is ethical. “Something you think is immoral may be ethically fine,” he said. Other teams presented “more of a liberal” point of view, he said.

Magar said the judges at nationals were more qualified and asked more challenging questions than those at regionals late last year. The regional competition qualified the RSC team for nationals.

Student Senate President Austin Carroll, Vice President Trey VanCuren and Secretary Lacee Woodrum rounded out the team.

Additionally, they were able to visit the beach during their stay. “California was beautiful,” Magar said. “I hadn’t ever seen the ocean before.”
